Conservation International

Conservation International (CI) believes that the earth's natural heritage must be maintained if future generations are to thrive spiritually, culturally, and economically. CI's mission is to conserve the earth's living natural heritage, our global diversity, and to demonstrate that human societies are able to live harmoniously with nature.

CI's President, Russell Mittermeier, has been working in the country since the mid-1970s. In 1992, CI opened an office in Paramaribo, Suriname, headed by Stanley Malone, former head of the Suriname Forest Service.

CI-Suriname works closely with high-ranking government officials, international donor agencies, local NGOs and indigenous communities to promote sound environmental policies, ensure the continued strength of the country's protected areas system and find economically and environmentally sound alternatives to destructive resource use.
